The revolution that is happening now
Until a few years ago, green backgrounds were standard in film production. Actors played on an empty set, surrounded by greenery, and special effects were added for months in post-production. Today, more and more filmmakers are saying “enough” to this. We are entering the era of LED XR, a technology that allows us to transfer any scene to a virtual world, in real time.
Audiovisual production - what exactly is LED XR?
LED XR is a combination of large-format LED screens with a rendering engine (usually Unreal Engine), which together create realistic backgrounds and lighting. This allows actors to act in the actual scenery they see with their own eyes – without having to imagine outer space, a desert or a futuristic city.
The end of the green background?
It is definitely not just a showy gadget. LED XR shortens production time, reduces costs and avoids many mistakes. Thanks to realistic reflections and lighting – everything just looks better. Actors can react better to their surroundings, directors make decisions faster, and the whole crew works more efficiently.
Why is LED XR virtual production better than green screen?
The lighting is authentic – light from LED screens naturally reflects off actors, eliminating green spill and the need for complex color correction .
Seeing the final effect at once – director and actors can react to the scene without guesswork, without a “blank” background in the eye of the camera.
Quick change of scenery – A new location? A few minutes and the world turns into a completely different environment.
Increased productivity – Production time reduced by 30%+, and costs will decrease due to reduced travel and external decoration .
Not just Hollywood - who's already using XR virtual production?
LED XR has become one of the hottest trends in the industry. The technology has been used in the production of, among other things:
- “The Mandalorian” (Disney+).
- “Obi-Wan Kenobi” (Disney+).
- “Dune: Part Two” (2024).
- “1899” (Netflix)

And what’s beyond the film?
LED XR doesn’t stop with Hollywood. The same technology is successfully used in:
- Advertising productions and music videos
- Live events and concerts
- Virtual showrooms and product demonstrations
- Education and training simulations
LED XR in the world of gaming and esports
XR LED technology is not limited to cinema and television – it is also increasingly used in computer game productions and esports broadcasts:
Esports on a new visual level
Spanish studio Cabal Esports has deployed 126 “Alfalite Litepix VP XR” LED panels in its Madrid studio. They use them at e-sports events (e.g. Ubisoft tournaments, Twitch) to create dynamic backgrounds generated in Unreal Engine – without having to build physical sets .
Virtual broadcast studios
XR LED solutions are also used in live broadcasts – XR LED panels are accompanied by software (e.g., Voyager XR from Ross Video, running on the Unreal Engine), allowing quick background changes, integration with advertising graphics and seamless support for sports or music events .
Application in gaming and VR
Epic Games, developers of Unreal Engine, is actively developing the XR Creative Framework, which is used not only in film productions, but also in the design of XR games and applications.
What’s next?
LED XR is more than a novelty. It’s the direction in which the entire creative industry is heading. You can already see that it’s giving an edge – and not just to large film studios.
